University of Calcutta

The University of Calcutta, also referred to as Calcutta University is an Indian public state institution that is situated in Kolkata, West Bengal. In Kolkata and the surrounding areas, it has 16 institutes and 151 associated undergraduate colleges. The oldest multifunctional university in South East Asia and the Indian Subcontinent, it was founded on January 24, 1857. It is regarded as a “Five-Star University” within India, and the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has awarded it an “A++” rating.

There are 60 departments at the university, divided into seven faculties: arts, business, social welfare, and business management; education; journalism; and library and information science. There is also an agriculture institution with six departments.
The University of Calcutta created the Institute of Agricultural Science to offer agricultural instruction and research.

Furthermore, the Faculty of Arts has 23 departments; the Departments of Commerce, Education, Journalism, and Library Science each have three departments; the Departments of Engineering and Technology have eight departments; the Departments of Science have 22 departments; and the Department of Home Science has courses on topics like food and nutrition, human development, and home science. The University College of Law, the predecessor to today’s Faculty of Law, was founded in January 1909. In February 1996, it received approval to operate as the university’s Department of Law. Also, there are numerous notable people connected to the faculty, such as Rajendra Prasad, Rashbehari Ghose, and Chittaranjan Das.

In Maidan, the university has a field and a tent where different sports are played. There are also organized inter-college competitions in sports like football, archery, basketball, and hockey. The Calcutta University Students’ Union occasionally sponsors social and cultural events, such as teachers’ day celebrations, blood donation drives, environmental awareness campaigns, relief fund collections, and Saraswati puja, among others.
