Hamdard, a commercial concern, put Islamic teachings on public charity, including health and education, into practice by establishing Wakf on 22 Shawwal, 1367 Hijri, which corresponds to August 28, 1948. The Hamdard National Foundation established in 1964 intended to receive and allocate the earnings made by Hamdard (Wakf) Laboratories. In accordance with the principles of the authentic teachings of Islam, the Hamdard National Foundation intended to take up philanthropic projects in the fields of education, medical treatment, and the advancement of knowledge.
In order to accomplish the goals of the wakf, Jamia Hamdard’s founder envisioned it as a center of higher learning for Unani medicine, Islamic studies, the biosciences, pharmacy, nursing, and other fields of knowledge.
