The entrepreneur Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, the royal family of Mysore, and the Indian government joined forces in 1909 to found the Indian Institute of Science (IISc).

IISc has developed into India’s top centre for cutting-edge scientific and technical education and research over the previous 111 years. Its mission is “to provide for advanced instruction and to conduct original investigations in all branches of knowledge as are likely to promote the material and industrial welfare of India.” In accordance with this guiding concept, the Institute has made an effort to promote a balance between the quest of fundamental knowledge and using research for commercial and social gain.

The research produced at IISc is varied, interdisciplinary, and transcends conventional limits. The Institute is divided into six sections by its more than 42 academic departments and centres. It also lays equal emphasis on student learning, with roughly 4000 students enrolled in a number of postgraduate and PhD programmes as well as a special four-year undergraduate programme designed to give young students in the basic sciences research-oriented instruction.
